In Belfast mobs attacked vehicles and soldiers after a five year old girl was killed by a British scout car. Police reported multiple injuries including a soldier wounded by rifle fire and children hit by bullets as nine vehicles were set ablaze in a seventh night of unrest across Northern Ireland.
President Nixon urged Congress to approve a broad program to curb air and water pollution and prevent crisis levels of contamination. He proposed a world heritage trust, a gasoline lead additive tax, and charges on power plants for sulfur oxide emissions.
A 19-year-old Stanford freshman told five U.S. senators that the draft betrays the Constitution and fuels youth hatred for war. Sen. Thurmond walked out. Sen. Stennis urged candor. The youth compared war powers to World War II and pressed Congress to end the peacetime draft.
Texas Governor John Connally, ally of Lyndon Johnson, won the Senate’s swift, uncontested confirmation to become Secretary of the Treasury. He will take office February 27, succeeding David Kennedy, the reserved former Chicago bank president who has held the post for two years.
Wives of two astronauts told Texas legislators in Austin they cannot phone neighbors while the President could talk with men on the moon by phone. Mrs. Russell Schweikert said she was furious at Nixon's moon landing imagery and contrasted her plight with Buzz Aldrin needing long distance calls from home.
The Navy will name a destroyer escort to be built this spring after Jesse Brown the first black naval aviator who died over Korea on December 5 1950 and received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal and Purple Heart. The New Jersey Supreme Court suspended Boston attorney F Lee Bailey from practicing law for one year for publicly criticizing the prosecution in a murder case and said he would appeal to the U S Supreme Court. Bailey said he would not let the ruling sit.
President Nixon appointed G Harrold Carswell a Tallahassee Florida lawyer to the three year term on the Council of the Administrative Conference of the United States. The post carries no pay. Carswell was previously rejected by the Senate on his Supreme Court nomination ten months earlier.
