NASA set for intensified exploitation of outer space
NASA enters 1964 with a shift from preparation to fruition as James E. Webb says the agency will push intensified development of rockets, spacecraft, and ground facilities. In 1963 the U S launched seven satellites plus one manned Mercury flight. The Soviet Union achieved major milestones with Valentina Tereshkova and Bykovsky five day mission. NASA postponed several flights including Nimbus and Relay 3 to 1964 while planning further tests and the Apollo path. NASA expanded to over 30 000 employees and built space infrastructure in New Orleans Houston Fox Cape Kennedy. 1970 moon goal remains realistic if funding continues.
