Jet-age divers battle Pier 74 fire in Los Angeles Harbor
A jet-age team of aquatic firefighters assisted by 40 divers fought the Pier 74 blaze at Los Angeles Harbor. Fire Chief Raymond Hill praised their courage as they lowered hoses beneath the wharf to stop the flames from spreading to pilings. By early afternoon 22 divers were in the water, swelling to 33 by 7 p.m, with the unit only 18 months old as an official LA Fire Department arm.
