Freedom in world dips 40 percent in eight nations
Freedom House reports a 40 percent drop in the number of people living in democracies across eight countries led by severe press and civil rights restrictions in India. The study, led by Raymond D. Gastil, cites western nations at the top of freedom rankings while the Soviet Union remains not free. The organization says 19.8 percent of the world’s population lives in freedom, 35 percent partly free, and 44.9 percent not free.
