The 82 surviving Pueblo crewmen and families marked Christmas at the naval hospital with a feast while tales of North Korea captivity surfaced. Relatives described beatings and stress on crew who shared accounts from Alvin Plucker and Edward Russell Jr. amid debriefings and a forthcoming court of inquiry.
The Apollo 8 families sent a Christmas telegram to USS Pueblo commander Cmdr Lloyd Bucher and crew returning home after 11 months in North Korean captivity. NASA Houston read the telegram at a San Diego Naval Hospital Christmas dinner, noting 25 000 messages received worldwide for the Pueblo families and promising a similar message to Apollo 8 families upon the spacecrafts return Friday from its moon voyage.
In San Diego the Hodges of Creswell Oregon said they now know how their son Duane Daniel Hodges died during North Korea's seizure of the USS Pueblo. Cmdr Bucher told them Hodges was on deck destroying secret papers when struck by enemy fire and died soon after singing a Christian song.
In San Diego a Navy chaplain said crewmen of the USS Pueblo held clandestine prayer sessions during their 11 month captivity in North Korea. The Rev. Robert Brengartner, a Navy priest who celebrated Christmas Mass for Roman Catholic crew members, said the men have shown great love for God and their fellow seamen while in captivity.
Captain Vincent C Thomas said the court of inquiry will begin testimony in about two weeks headed by Vice Admiral Harold G Bowen. Details of the capture will be released as the inquiry progresses with classified material discussed only at times, as the crew spends time with families after release by North Korea.
