Councilmen Refuse to Take Stand on Fair Housing Law
Long Beach leaders spar over fair housing and civil rights during a brief council session. NAACP president Joseph Brooks urged backing of the Rumford Act and pending federal bills, but the council avoided a formal stance and directed no action beyond possible future discussion. Councilman Sullivan argued party politics should stay out, stressing the city’s nonpolitical historic posture. The Human Relations Committee has yet to report, with two members planning a minority note.
