FDA recalls swordfish as mercury concerns rise
FDA announced a voluntary recall of all swordfish after testing suggested mercury levels exceed 0.5 ppm in samples. About 1 percent of an estimated 2 million pounds in cold storage has been examined. Earlier samplings, as recent as 1970, showed mercury above the guideline. FDA note that mercury in seawater is known at low levels, but fish source levels remain unclear. A separate tuna test last week found nearly one-fourth of samples above the 0.5 ppm limit.

Justice Dept urged GM trust suits, Nader says
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader charged that Justice Department attorneys and economists recommended antitrust action against General Motors over four years, but bureaucratic cowardice and politics blocked suits. He urged a full inquiry to examine the department’s antitrust division and referenced advisers like Donald Turner. He cited recommendations on illegal mergers and exclusive franchising as evidence GM fits antitrust patterns, while alleging official silence and pressures on McLaren to halt actions.

Food Stamp Compromise Freezes State Costs at 28 Million
In a Christmas recess move, Senate House conferees backed a final food stamp bill that removes a provision forcing states to pay part of costs, saving California about 28 million dollars. Governor Reagan opposed the state payment plan, arguing it was beyond California taxpayers. Some liberals feared the provision would cause states to drop out of the program. Senator McGovern criticized the measure for low benefits and a strict work test and urged rejection of the report. California advocate Teague supported opposition to the state payment clause.
