Watson's Bribery Conviction Set Aside in California

Superior Court Judge William B. Keene dismissed the bribery conviction against former Los Angeles harbor commissioner George D. Watson, citing a second reasonable alternative to explain his conduct. Watson was fined $1000 on a separate conflict of interest charge and barred from holding public office in California. The case involved a $42 000 stock purchase through Keith Smith and a $10 400 loan Watson made to Gerald Sutton for a liquor license, with unusual sentencing previously applied to two other harbor commissioners.
