Adm. F Massie Hughes longtime commandant of the Fifth Naval District died of a heart attack in Norfolk Virginia He would have retired in June 1958 and was a 1922 Naval Academy graduate He led the district for three and a half years and planned to step down next year.

Kennedy rebuts Dillon pact talk in treasury post

President elect Kennedy said Dillon did not seek or obtain any commitment on following Democratic platform policies before taking the treasury job. He added the President cannot bind cabinet members to treaties as he announced Walter Heller as Council of Economic Advisers chair to balance conservative fiscal guidance from Dillon.

Eisenhower Dillon dispute over written commitments

Kennedy denied any written conditions were sought or given, saying no president would provide written commitments. He defended Dillon as knowing such a request would not be made. Separately, North American Aviation Co. workers in Long Beach Downey and Fullerton were told a one cent per hour wage boost was planned to offset the cost of living rise, based on the November CPI.
