State fund proposed for malpractice claims
The plan, urged by nine legislators, would create a state fund to cover malpractice claims not paid by doctors premiums. Dr Dan Lang says funds could come from health care taxes and patients would share premiums. The idea follows rising malpractice costs and possible doctor walkouts.

Murder suspect is stabbed in county jail cell
Long Beach murder defendant Robert Birdsall 40 was killed in a Sept. 15 shooting. Fred Harvey 26, awaiting trial, was stabbed in the right shoulder and lung during a jail fight by six cellmates who used a broken mirror and razor. Harvey and attackers face attempted murder charges. Harvey also faces kidnapping and attempted rape counts. He recently sought to dismiss his public defender and represent himself.

Fromme Sent to U.S. Center in San Diego for Classification
Lynette Fromme, 27, who received a life sentence for attempting to assassinate President Ford, was transferred to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego for classification. U.S. Marshal Arthur Van Court called her cooperative and in good spirits during the transfer from Sacramento. The earlier court appearance included her calling Judge MacBride a fool and striking the prosecutor with an apple.

Robbers Escape With 40000 From Montgomery Ward Vault
Two robbers tied up employees at the Eagle Rock Montgomery Ward vault and fled with an estimated 40 000 in money. One suspect carried a handgun and both were described as between 25 and 35 years old. They gained entry through a rear entrance before opening time.
