Santa in South Pacific Kearsarge Carries Christmas Mail
The USS Kearsarge, flagship of Rear Adm. Shopper, handles the bulk of mail for 3,000 aboard amid 20–25 ft seas and 45 mph winds in the Gulf of Tonkin. Capt. Creighton W. Cook, a MIT-educated naval aviator, oversees mail flights from Subic Point, with helicopters and destroyers like Wilke, Thomaston, and Knox aiding in parcel delivery and mail staging aboard the carrier and in its task group.
