Soviet Mars TV footage lasts 20 seconds
The first and only Mars television transmission lasted twenty seconds and showed no landscape details. Soviet officials blamed the brief signal on unknown focal issues or a dust storm. Instruments aboard the lander aimed to analyze surface composition and atmospheric properties, while orbiters Mars 2, Mars 3 and America's Mariner 9 would supply further data.

Mars 2 Reaches Martian Orbit After Capsule Loss
Mars 2 entered Martian orbit on November 27 following a capsule jettisoned yet plummeting to the surface. Western observers suspect the lander was designed for soft descent but failed. Mars 2 and Mars 3 both achieved wide oval orbits and sent Earth photographs of Mars surface.
