Tax study faults giant firms for low taxes
A Capitol report notes that 10 major U.S. corporations with profits totaling about 978 million in 1973 paid no income taxes, while 20 more paid barely 10 percent. The survey, by staff of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation, cites firms including Freeport Minerals, United Airlines, American Electric Power and Continental Illinois as examples, and points to tax subsidies as a factor.

Energy bill dead says Jackson
Sen Henry M Jackson blasted the administration for an immobile and obstinate stance on the energy conservation bill. He warned the measure’s fate in Congress was sealed by a proposed natural gas deregulation amendment and criticized the White House for prioritizing oil and gas profits over national energy conservation. He noted major concessions offered but rejected, and called for action to protect the economy and energy security.
