A man lit a cigarette near an open gas manhole causing an explosion that killed three and burned two others. Residents heard the blast as Mrs. Loraine Cobley helped pull survivors from the scene, wrapping their burned hands in sheets.
In Santa Monica a six-man Santa Polo City Water Department crew joined the first fire unit in a search for youths trapped after a fire. A pipe explosion sent flames up to 15 feet high, killing three rescuers while another survivor was found. Police and fire crews continued the search around manholes as residents watched. The incident involved a water-pipe system feeding a local water plant. no injuries beyond the five victims were reported.
