Navy ROTC cadet death ruled self inflicted
Madison AP coroner's jury found former Navy ROTC cadet Michael Cooper killed himself with a .357 Magnum after a Navy pickup order sought his custody at his Waunakee home. The jury urged the Navy to show more individual concern and fully explore solutions when problems arise. Cooper attended UW on an ROTC scholarship, failed pilot training and a nuclear program, then rejected his commission and faced two years of active duty. ROTC official cited his inflated ego and views that enlisted personnel were vegetables.
