Viet Cong intensified a holiday terror campaign in Saigon with a grenade attack and bombing in a major American housing sector. Official tallies report one U.S. soldier, one American civilian, and one Vietnamese civilian killed, with numerous wounded. eyewitnesses claim higher deaths and broader injuries.
Washington President Nixon vetoed the 1970 Manpower Act which would have funded public service jobs for hard core unemployed at an estimated cost of 9.3 billion dollars. He said the measure would create artificial jobs and keep workers in subsidized positions, consolidating job training programs under the Labor Department and echoing critics of a WPA like approach.
Veterans of the court hear Justice William C. Douglas pledge to remain on the bench and urge youths to pursue civil rights via law. He defends the court’s independence, cites travel without expense, and notes pollution and civil rights as top issues facing America.
Brian Behan brother of Brenda Behan said Wednesday a shooter fired five bullets into his shoreham boat as he and family rode. Behan, 42, an author, is a Sussex University student and called it the act of a political maniac.
Channcey Medhberry, a Beverly Hills window teller for 32 years, was named Wednesday in San Francisco as Bank of America’s new board chairman. Medhberry, 53, will succeed Louis Lundberg, chairman since 1965, upon Lundberg’s retirement on April 1.
