New Jersey Supreme Court strikes down fornication law
The New Jersey Supreme Court, in a 5-2 ruling, invalidated the colonial age fornication statute as an unconstitutional invasion of privacy. The decision, written by Justice Morris Pashman, held that criminalizing sex between an unmarried man and woman intrudes on personal liberty while declining to argue public-morality regulation justifies the law. Charles Saunders was among the defendants.
