Nixon palace guards uniforms prove hard to shed
The Secret Service said it has about 100 White House palace guard uniforms from 1970 still in storage in Washington. They were deemed too theatrical for use and cannot be destroyed or sold. Uniforms include white tunics and caps with gold braid. requests to repurpose them came from amateur groups and individuals. The service may donate them to the General Services Administration or Smithsonian, but NASA moon-landing use was dismissed. The designer says the items weren't expensive and could be kept for possible future use.

Los Angeles considers cost controls for 1984 Olympics
Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro proposed an ordinance to limit city spending on the 1984 Games. The measure would restrict appropriations and capital outlays, prevent diversion of existing grant funds, create cost accounting and an Olympic expense trust, and set revenue-based spending limits. Council member Bob Ronka criticized the plan, favoring a citywide referendum to bar taxpayer funds for the Olympics.
