Painkiller from human pituitary shown in early tests
California researchers report preliminary tests of synthetic beta endorphin from the pituitary gland as a morphine like pain reliever and aid for narcotic withdrawal. Five patients aged 27 to 82 received intravenous beta endorphin, with two cancer patients noting improvement and methadone patients also relieved, no adverse effects observed. Further trials are planned to confirm results and explore broader uses.

Cleveland Clinic teams pursues booster heart pump contract
A Cleveland Clinic artificial organs team, led by Dr. Yukihiko Nose, won a $1.2 million three year contract from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to develop a permanently implanted booster pump.
