Stennis flags segregation in California schools
Sen. John Stennis cites 1968 California figures to claim major parts of the state’s public schools are segregated. He notes 62.5 percent of 382,525 Negro pupils attend schools 80 to 100 percent minority dominated, with Los Angeles showing 22,717 Black and 737 Spanish American students in nearly all minority schools. He cites Oakland Fresno San Francisco and Richmond as examples and argues HEW ignores northern isolation while southern schools face pressure to desegregate.
