Moon's molten past hinted by Apollo seismic data
Scientists using Apollo moon seismic data report evidence that the Moon once was hot and molten like the Earth. Dr Nafi Toksoz of MIT and collaborators from Columbia and Hawaii presented at the AGU meeting in San Francisco. They describe a crust formed from cooled jet debris, a rigid mantle beneath, and a mantle that extends to at least 100 kilometers, suggesting the Moon may have formed from Earth materials.
