A night of explosions leveled the Indonesian army ammunition depot near Bandung 100 miles south of Jakarta. About 20 soldiers guarding the plant were believed killed as witnesses reported windows shattered and refugees fleeing. The government acknowledged the blast but released few details amid regional political tension with the Dutch.
A man, John R. McCarthy, 22, dangled six hours by his left arm from a ceiling vent 25 feet above a Redondo Beach market. Police booked him on burglary charges and hospital attendants warned amputation may be needed.
