Reunited Lovers Defy Odds Across Moscow to LA
Elaine Gutierrez, an American exchange student, and Victor Besedin, a Mongolian Ukrainian student, married in Moscow in 1976. After visa denials and political pressure, Elaine and her daughter Victoria were reunited with Victor at Los Angeles International Airport, aided by Rep. Patterson and media attention. The couple face a long wait before possible U.S. citizenship as Victor remains cautious about returning to Russia.
