Kennedy ally Tunney backs Muskie in California race
Sen. John Tunney publicly endorses Sen. Edmund Muskie for president, signaling he will not run in a Kennedy bid and aiming to energize Muskie’s California campaign with a Tunney-drafted operation. The decision ends Tunney’s short lived favorite son plan and aligns top California backers with Muskie ahead of the June 6, 1972 primary.
