Navy selects three skippers for first Polaris subs
The Navy named Cmdr. James B. Osborn Cmdr. Harold F. Shear and Cmdr. William E. Sims as captains of the first three Polaris missile submarines. Squadron 14 will organize two divisions of boats with crews and training overseen by Admiral Rickover. The project aims for strategic nuclear deterrence with submarines carrying about 14 Polaris missiles each.
