BRUSSELS Secretary of State William P. Rogers condemned the Soviet bid for a security conference as unreal and premature. He argued it could worsen East West relations and warned against any talks that would ratify the Brezhnev doctrine. Rogers urged real progress toward reduced European tensions.
An estimated 300000 rock fans gathered at Alta Font Speedway near San Francisco for a major concert. Organizers faced site challenges but the event drew attendees from across the country. Medical teams treated many on site. several babies were born as crowds celebrated with balloons and flowers. Two youths died and four were injured in a separate highway accident near Livermore while en route to the concert, the van hitting a railroad overcrossing on Highway 101.
Thirty five Republican senators praised President Nixon for renouncing chemical and biological weapons. They called the policy decision one of the century's most important arms control initiatives and noted it reflected Senate principles and even surpassed proposed amendments to a military procurement bill.
