Ginseng Trade Across Indiana to Asia Linked to Vance
Indiana dealer Vance, 76, dominates local ginseng sales as diggers bring roots to him in Orange County. He ships harvested roots to New York brokers, then to Hong Kong and Korea, with prices lately around 60 to 70 dollars a pound. Vance notes dry root yields about one quarter of fresh weight and cautions that homegrown roots can fetch less. He says cultivation exists but quality suffers and fears winding down as seeds are cleared.
