Civil rights clash over race data in schools vote
The House approved a conference report funding agencies including HEW with 212 to 176. It would bar federal data collection on race religion sex or national origin in schools and could affect desegregation and busing cases. WEW chief Weinberger warned the Holt amendment would curb civil rights enforcement. Critics called it dangerous and apartheid-like while Holt argued it protects privacy and stops misinterpretation of law.

Ford bids for more veteran education benefits funds
President Ford sought an extra 813.7 million in supplemental approval after Congress overrode his veto of education benefit expansion for Vietnam era veterans. The House vote was 334 to 10 and the Senate 4 to 1. Ford argued inflation costs total about 502 million beyond his proposed 2.3 percent increase and criticized loan provisions and longer eligibility.
