New belting reminder replaces interlock in cars
Washington AP The Department of Transportation unveiled a new automobile safety belt reminder system to replace the interlock. A visual Fasten Seat Belt signal will flash for four to eight seconds after ignition and an audible alert will sound if the belt is not fastened. Makers may install the new system now or keep the interlock until Feb 24, 1975 when all new cars must adopt the reminder system. Congress banned the interlock in October after complaints from car owners.
