Vote at 18 would cut college revenue for out of state students
A UPI report from Chico states that lowering the voting age to 18 would deprive California state colleges of about 2.16 million dollars yearly in nonresident tuition. Dr. Alvin Marks testified that 2,427 out-of-state students could declare California residency and escape the 900 dollar nonresident fee, costing the system over 2.16 million. Another Chico State student, Brad Hathaway, questioned public support for the change, while NEA and CTA witnesses backed the move. The committee planned an executive session to decide a recommendation. In San Francisco, Denise Paishes. a Foothill College student, filed a federal class-action suit seeking to lower the voting age to 18, arguing 14th Amendment equal protection rights are violated by the California Constitution.
