Demotion for Girard in Army over Japanese killing
William S. Girard, convicted in the killing of a Japanese shell scavenger, is demoted from Specialist 2C to private by the U.S. Army. The action, under Army rule for foreign court convictions, reduces pay from 252.40 to 173.90 monthly. Girard and his Japanese wife plan to depart Yokohama for San Francisco aboard the Anderson under a suspended three-year sentence.
