Steel price debate widens as administration weighs controls
Representative Moorhead urged hearings on steel prices while President Carter’s aides signaled no immediate railback. In Plains Georgia Carter rejected a steel executive offer to meet steel men after Jan 20, and Lilley pushed a market based stance. A report by Lilley and Rosenberg warned weak shipments and no first quarter rise, indicating buyers foresee little demand.

Secret Witness case killer to defend himself in murder trial
A 21 year old man charged with murdering Long Beach jeweler’s wife, Helen Shaukis, 56, during a June jewelry store robbery, was granted permission to act as his own attorney. Joseph A. Gesualdo, held at Los Angeles County Jail after an informant tip, will face Judge Elsworth Beam who warned he received no courtroom help. The trial is set for January 26. Gesualdo contends insufficient investigation by the public defender’s office and declares he must defend himself as he fights for his life. The case stems from the June 3 shooting at Shanks Jewelers, 5630 Atlantic Ave., where Mrs. Shaukis died Aug. 29 from a severed spinal injury.
