Protesters Tried to Avoid Clash at Democratic Convention
Thomas E. Hayden of Students for a Democratic Society testified that demonstrators sought peaceful protests while Chicago police buildup deterred middle class participation. He cited a plan to pin delegates until a suitable candidate was nominated and noted communist participation, though he criticized the party’s program. Hayden also described Paris meetings with North Vietnamese diplomats and a brief encounter with W. Averell Harriman during protests.
