A Shell Oil Company helicopter crashed in the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles south of Cameron Louisiana, killing four aboard. The crew included pilot Robert McCann and Morgan City men R M LeMoine RH Hebert and coast guard Lt Donald E Greenameyer, returning from an offshore rig or navigation aid inspection.

Meteor streaks across southern California night sky
A brilliant meteor lit up the southern California sky early Tuesday then plunged into the ocean near the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Residents from San Diego to Ventura reported the sighting, with many in Long Beach. The Coast Guard investigated a possible plane crash but found no aircraft. officials concluded the flaming object was a meteor.

City approves 6205 settlement for four civil damage claims
City Council authorized 6205 to settle four damage claims against the city. Mary Smith received 2500 after a city refuse truck hit her car at Blinn Street and Pacific Coast Highway when brakes failed. Five Pupils Start Fire at Sarasota Catholic School
Five students at St. Martha's Catholic School in Sarasota Florida set fire to a portable classroom building. The blaze caused minor damage with no injuries. Police declined to name the youths, ages 40 to 42, who reportedly mimicked television fire scenes.

Carrier Princeton Returns Home from Far East Flight
The USS Princeton, last active carrier of the Korean War era, is due at Long Beach today after a Far East tour with the 7th Fleet. Arriving at Pier 2, the ship spent nine months in the Pacific, offloading squadrons from San Diego and Yokosuka before mothballing plans.
