Orbiter saga reshaped by Von Braun Jupiter plan
In 1955 the Army was ordered to abandon Orbiter and forget satellites, but Von Braun pressed to develop a 1300 mile Jupiter program using Jupiter Cs based on Redstone missiles. He secured authorization to test, while the army faced political pushback, budget scrutiny, and delays that reshaped early US space efforts. The episode intersects with Vanguard setbacks and Cold War space race tensions.
