Rommel Biography Probes Desert Fox Myths and Motives
West Germany’s Wolf Heckmann argues in Rommel's War in Africa that Field Marshal Erwin Rommel brutalized troops, blamed subordinates for setbacks, and rose to fame through Nazi propaganda and Allied praise. He portrays Rommel as calculating, not principled, and suggests postwar depictions masked flaws, including a controversial stance on resisting Hitler and continuing the war.
