Election and legal battles over health board seats tonight
The Health Systems Agency SAC Four in Los Angeles County will meet at 7:39 in Long Beach City Council chambers. Robert J. Campbell, the agency’s new director, will review the seating dispute over SAC Four and outline certification procedures for the countywide election held last June 21. The election faced challenges from officials across the county, including Torrance Councilwoman Kathryn Geissert, who complained that elected officials were barred from seating or forced to nominate others to fit ethnic or economic criteria. some rules permitted only one official per city. A judge declined to overturn the election but ordered the winners seated on the subarea councils. SAC Four aligns with the Fourth Supervisorial District, boosting Long Beach influence with officials such as Assemblyman Vincent Thomas and Councilwoman Eunice Sato. Five Long Beach residents were elected to represent patients’ interests on SAC: Thomas Blackburn-Rodriguez, Nancy L. Frank, Matilda Spek, Julia Martinez, and Charlotte H. Purnell.
