Chavez blasts ruling on farmworker death in barroom clash

Cesar Chavez denounces a Kern County coroner jury finding the death of Nagi Daifullah, 24, an accidental result of a barroom scuffle. UFW claims deputy helmeted by a flashlight caused fatal head injuries, urging a Justice Department probe. Doctors testified skull fractures matched a broad impact, not a flashlight strike, and witnesses gave mixed accounts of where Daifullah was struck.

Death bill delayed as Deukmejian pushes amendments

California senator George Deukmejian delayed action on the death penalty measure awaiting next week’s Assembly floor fight. The bill would revive capital punishment for 15 crimes including murder of on duty officers, with amendments to delete four death sentences. If approved, it could reach the Senate and then Gov Reagan for signature.

Deukmejian Linked to Capitol Picketer Enmity

In Sacramento Long Beach Assemblyman George Deukmejian joined an infamous roster when protester Robert H. Simpson, a 2 year old picketer at the Capitol, targeted him with signs denouncing Reagan and others. Simpson, arrested nearly 250 times since a 1979 law barring Capitol picketing, appeared Thursday with a sign naming Deukmejian and two other lawmakers as “bastard senators.”
