Space Center Deputy Director Quits Amid Agency Exodus
George Trimble, deputy director at Houston Space Center, will resign after 22 years with the agency amid a wave of top officials leaving following Apollo program success. Lt Gen. Samuel C. Phillips and George Hage also depart for the Air Force and Boeing respectively as Trimble eyes new pursuits. Low is expected to replace Trimble. Vandenberg to test solar powered electric thrusters on an Agena upper stage rocket in October.

Rocket destroys two satellites in Atlantic flight
A Delta rocket carrying Pioneer 10 and an earth orbiting satellite veered off course over the Atlantic and was destroyed by range safety. The destruct action stopped the mission eight minutes after liftoff. Pioneer 10 aimed to map solar radiation for future moon flights and years of Pioneer satellites will continue to report solar activity from space.
