Meningitis Scare Hits Fort Ord and Hawaii
Army officials moved 108 personnel from Oahu to Fort Ord for precautionary observation after a meningitis outbreak linked deaths at Fort Ord and in Hawaii. Autopsy identified the same illness as the cause of death for a Honolulu recruit. 62 other cases were reported among trainees and affiliates. Firefighters battled a 1200 acre forest fire near Douglas, Wyoming, aided by light rain as winds eased. The Army ordered preventive measures for recruits and inspected trainees arriving at Fort Ord to separate those testing positive from others.
