Interpreters sought in My Lai court martial clash
In Ga, defense lawyer F Lee Bailey pressed the case to compel two South Vietnamese interpreters to testify at Capt Ernest Medina’s My Lai murder trial. The government had used depositions by Nguyen Dinh Phu and Duong Minh without their appearance, prompting Bailey to request White House involvement. The trial paused as depositions were read. Separately, Richard Decker, San Francisco Zoo manager, and a woman identified as Dona were found dead in a zoo-area apartment, authorities saying their deaths appeared self-inflicted.

Reston on China's plan to reshape its people
James Reston of the New York Times said in Hong Kong that Communist China seeks to refashion the character of its people, linking public morals to political aims. He noted a strong Calvinist influence and doubted Nixon's Peking trip would change Chinese policies.
