Black model Joanne Bell says she helped Burton quit drinking
New York social column reports Joanne Bell, first black Playboy centerfold, declined praise for reconciling Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Bell says she assisted Burton to quit drinking, aided by visits to his villa in Celigny and her Geneva home, while confirming lasting affection for both stars and planning her own return to California with son Troy.

Dance symposium at Long Beach State delights and unsettles
The Long Beach State University choreographers symposium drew about one hundred attendees, many seated on the floor. It featured Kei Takei’s Light Part 5 from 1571 and Marcela Sakamoto’s Beads, with Sakamoto performing in most pieces using minimal movement and props. Sakamoto’s Beads and The Woman showcased her symbolic staging while Avis used Gladys Balin’s choreography and Density 21.5 provided a stark audio backdrop. The performances combined hypnotic visuals with exploratory movement and mixed success across the works, contrasted with Takei’s seven hour project approach and Abeling’s piano interludes adding atmosphere to the event.
