Calley's Defense Granted Access to Secret Army Data
Attorneys for Lt. William L. Calley Jr. were allowed to review classified Army documents in a hearing at Fort Benning, as the defense seeks to prove involvement in the My Lai Massacre. Judge Col. Reid W. Kennedy restricted access to other records and reserved rulings on discovery. No trial date was set. Calley, 27, of Miami, faces possible court martial and the death penalty if convicted. The case centers on the March 16, 1968, killings in My Lai and Operation Phoenix, a code name cited in reports for ordered village destruction.
