Quiet Beach Day Ends in Tragedy and Rescue
Pacific coast beaches drew large crowds with warm temperatures and calm surf. Lifeguards reported few rescues as Sandy Flascher choked on peach pit at Seal Beach and Lt. Mick MacArthur performed the Heimlich. A diver, James B. Jensen, 22, from Norwalk, died after his body was recovered at Crescent Bay. Crowd counts ranged from 9,000 to 165,000 across named beaches.

Sheriffs Fly Diver to Hospital After Catalina Dive
A Pomona man Wallace Brown, 33, lost vision and felt paralysis in his right arm while diving off Catalina Island. Deputy Dennis Richards of the Los Angeles Aero Bureau spotted him, directed the Rio Rita to harbor, and airlifted Brown to Avalon Municipal Hospital. He then was flown to Pomona by ambulance plane for his own physician’s care.
