U S Civil Rights Panel Attacks Ford Antibusing Stance

The U S Commission on Civil Rights charged the Ford administration with undermining peaceful desegregation through its antibusing policy. The panel urged Congress to unfreeze federal funds for busing and offered a tax break plan to move families into desegregating neighborhoods. The six-member panel, led by Arthur Fleming, criticized executive and legislative efforts to curb court power.

Boston and Louisville officials push back on desegregation report

Boston and Louisville officials criticized a U S Civil Rights Commission report on their handling of court ordered school desegregation last year. The commission cited leadership failures amid violent protests in both cities. In Louisville County Judge Todd Hollenbach said the report offered no guidance while mixing busing and desegregation. In Boston antibusing leaders dismissed the findings as flawed and faulted planning and police response though most schools desegregated peacefully.
