Know Your Port Series Number One How It All Began
The Port of Long Beach started with a first shipping channel and a 245000 bond vote for water frontage and a pier. By 1911 the first municipally owned pier was finished and the port became a reality. Subsequent bond issues from 1916 to 1928 funded channels and terminals. Oil discovery in 1936 funded air port growth through 1965, after which development relied on operating income and revenue bonds. Today it is "America's Most Modern Port" and a Western cargo leader with ongoing planning to stay an international commerce hub.
