Fare Increase Near for Airlines as CAB Signals Move
The Civil Aeronautics Board indicated airlines may raise fares next month to cover rising costs and lower returns. Increases depend on one of three proposed formulas and could take effect between Sept. 15 and Oct. 1 after Sept. 4 oral arguments by five carriers American Continental Eastern Northwest and United. Proposals include a per mile charge of 5.7 cents a mile or tiered flat increases, with dates varying by carrier. Eastern supports its approach though Braniff and TWA have not filed proposals.
