Ex-offenders aid booklet aims to cut prison costs and aid reintegration

Evans leads in rescues cost food shelter housing and medical care are available. The booklet grew from Castro s interest in prison problems and his work with convicts at Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institution. Six interns prepared the guide by surveying inmates and local groups to remove middlemen and direct aid. Housing options include YMCA in Long Beach and Hoffman House in Compton, plus clinics in San Pedro and Compton. Reactions are positive, with requests from sheriff s department police and parole board, though printing costs were a hurdle. Castro believes such efforts can keep men out of prison and plans further editions financed by Golden State Insurance.
