British TV imports face format clashes with U S audiences
NBC talent scout David Tebet says most British comedies fail to travel to America despite occasional successes. He notes that local humor hinges on cultural context, with shows like Steptoe and Son and On the Buses adapted differently as Sanford and Son and Lotsa Luck. He cites All in the Family as a rare cross over. Tebet also discusses audience targeting for sponsors and changes between British and American versions.
