Telescope invention boosts telescope reach for quasars
Tucson astronomers Gordon Gilbert Roger Angel and Richard Cromwell unveiled a two dimensional photon counting television detector that increases viewing range tenfold and lets study of quasars 100 times fainter. Tested on a 90 inch telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory the device converts light into electronic signals for processing or storage and could yield better data with larger telescopes or satellite platforms.
